Thread on Porco and why i think he is a great character.
Porco is introduced as a character blindly following military's authority, being a victim of opression and brainwashing in warrior program. His personality imidietaly tells us just how absurd the morality of people-
in Marley is which helps us having a better understanding of the opposition - that being the most crucial thematic in this part of the story.
Porco has troubles understanding people, he thinks Marcel sacrificed himself for Reiner following his duty as a warrior.
He couldn't process why Reiner was trying to imitate Marcel in being a strong and reliable figure since he was a simple minded person and valued physical competence more than anything.
Porco despite being having faithfullness in Marley's military and his duty as a warrior he was never loyal to them and often questioned whether their acts aren't selfish.
What he said about Tybur family is important since Marley's usage of the warrior and the titans is a lot of times selfish and criminal with the justification of Eldians being frightening and dangeruous being used often as an excuse for their comfort.
The contradiction betwen Reiner and Porco in the post-FOS is that Reiner had a clear goal but didn't know how to achieve it while Porco had enough strenght but not a clear reasoning. They both lacked something and it was caused by their enviroment.
Both of them had to suffer the consequences of Marcels decision and it leading to the conflict between them later on. Reiner failing the mission on Paradis to retreat the founder and Porco losing his brother plus living with guilt of not getting chosen and being able to save him.
The encounter with the Survey Corps helped him understand the difficulty of the task to retreat the founder and that leading to him sympathize with Reiner more. That's not much but later on Reiner receive's a beer from him and call's Porco by his real name.
Chapter 119 is the crucial point. Realizing Marcel went to the Paradis island and died not for the sake of the world, the country or duty but simply because he cared about his brother. That change's Porco's understanding of his faithfulness and motivations.
Porco dies no longer being a failure as a warrior since he should be the one to inherit the armoured titan, no longer having a wrong devotion after understanding Marcel's reasonings and no longer being a failure in rescuing the founder since he entrusts everything to Reiner.
In short i think that he is a great and well-developed character that carries the major themes of the story - that being the opression and how it affects the inviduals and idk why i spent like a fucking hour on that and welcome back.
