We are paying (mostly white) @UFT teachers (who make pretty good money + excellent benefits) to stay home & teach while our kids go to Learning Bridges sites to remote learn & be overseen by a staff that is underpaid, non-unionized, & predominantly Black and brown. WTF. (1/13) https://twitter.com/Gothamist/status/1330276029550780423
This is wild. Wild! We are saying that schools are too dangerous for white teachers but LB sites are somehow safe enough for the staff there? The staff that isn't unionized and is mostly WOC? (2/13)
There are woefully few LB spots and it doesn't work the way @NYCMayor says it works (not sure if he it just lying to reporters or he honestly doesn't know, and not sure which scenario is worse). Tens of thousands of families who wants spots don't have them. (3/13)
That is tens of thousands of families where one parent (usually a woman) has to stay home with their child during the day because schools are too unsafe for @UFT teachers but somehow LB sites are safe enough for its staff. (4/13)
And I am not even touching how during the worst fiscal crisis in a generation the City is paying a brand new workforce to watch kids who need to learn remotely while their teachers stay home (literally paying 2 people to do the job 1 person used to do) (5/13)
(n.b. it is hilarious to me to be accused of union busting because you think that my rag tag group of moms has the ability to take on the @UFT, which forced the City to shut down schools when no one else wanted to & is forcing the City to hire a brand new workforce? Ok.) (6/13)
But back to LB: 1800 City schools are empty. Maybe we can start LB programs there? Kids can go back to their hybrid schedule, bring their laptops to learn remotely, and be supervised by the non-union WOC whose safety is irrelevant (7/13)
Or will the @UFT claim that the buildings are unionized or some such nonsense to avoid people actually seeing what is going on? That we are paying non-unionized Black and brown women to do the work that teachers no longer want to do? (8/13)
Unions are great. I believe everyone should be in a union. But unions are also powerful, especially in NYC, and we can't ignore what the @UFT is doing. (9/13)
We are about to create and pay an entire workforce of low-paid babysitters, whose safety is immaterial, to "protect" @UFT members. And I safe "protect" because #schoolsaresafe and there is no reason to think otherwise (10/13)
Everyone should be against this. Conservative fiscal responsibility people should be against creating a duplicate government-paid workforce. Liberals should be against shifting risk from unionized whiter workers to non-unionized browner workers (11/13)
And yet we are about to do exactly that. Because @UFT is so freaking powerful. (12/13)
So...let's not do it. Let's #keeonycschoolsopen. (13/13)
