How Franz Beckenbauer changed football as we know it?
Why he is the most complete player ever?

Der Kaiser- Leader, Player, Manager and President

Let's look at the series of events, facts and career timeline of the GOAT [THREAD]
Although, his father strongly opposed, Franz Beckenbauer started playing football by the age of 9 and joined local club SC München von 1906

Most of his early youth career was spent at this club before he made the switch to Bayern
Bayern is where his career really kicked off as he established himself well within the youth teams

At Bayern, he would go on to do incredible things that changed football forever
He was an ardent fan of 1859+1 Munich who were dominating Munich back then.
He started his career as a centre forward before moving into midfield and then to central defense.
However, his dream to join 1859+1 Munich came to an end during an Under-14 youth tournament in Neubiberg
SC München von 1906 and 1859+1 Munich made it to the finals. Since SC München, Der Kaiser was already ready to make a move.
But a series of incidents and a nasty with opposing centre-half was a bitter pill for Franz
So Franz decided to snub 1860 Munich in favor of Bayern Munich
This is perhaps the golden moment in Bayern's history and the reason for success we are enjoying
It changed the club forever as they mostly played second fiddle to 1860 Munich back in the day
Beckenbauer continued in the youth until 1964 before becoming professional with Bayern
Beckenbauer make made his debut with Bayern in a Bundesliga promotion play-off match on the left wing against FC St. Pauli on 6 June 1964
His breakout season came in 1964-65 when he made 31 appearances in Regionalliga Süd (second division back then)
He scored an impressive 16 goals in second division as Bayern progressed to Bundesliga.
Beckenbauer along with Gerd Muller and Sepp Maier were the main pillars of Bayern's dominance in German football.
The trio ensured the transition to Bundesliga was easier
He played as a central midfielder or on left wing in the first couple of seasons in the Bundesliga
However, he went onto create the role of the modern sweeper (libero)
Something that changed football as we know it.
He used to drop back and progress ball or clean up with defensive work when forward breached the final line
A more fluid role for a centre back compared to standard man marking back in the day
The role was present in football even before Franz but he showed new dimensions in it
He raised the bar for his fellow defenders and that impact is still present in the game
Having played his initial years higher up the pitch, he had clear understanding of an attacker and a midfielder
Bayern won their first German Cup, Cup Winners' Cup soon after promotion
Franz Beckenbauer was made the captain of Bayern in 1968-69. Around this time, he created the modern sweeper role
Being a Libero, Der Kaiser used to be involved in lot of distribution and link up with attack
Bayern won their first Bundesliga title ever under Franz's captaincy in the same season
This began the dominance of Bayern in Germany that is still going till date
After that season, he was dearly called as "Der Kaiser" by fans and media.
There are multiple theories behind the name but this is the most popular one.
Franz posed for a photo right beside a bust of the former Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I before a friendly.
Media called him Fußball-Kaiser in their tabloids and eventually popularized as Der Kaiser
Meanwhile, on the national front, Franz became an important player as well
He was part of the 1966 world cup squad that went to the final
He started the game as a central midfielder as West Germany lost the game in extra time
The most iconic moment in the history of German football came in 1970 world cup.
During the semis against Italy(called as Game of the Century), Franz had a broken collarbone during the final minutes of regular time.
But he strapped up his arm and played through the extra time
Beckenbauer was at his absolute peak from late 1960s to early 1970s
He won many individual awards and silver ware during this phase
He led Bayern to three back to back league titles from 1971-74
During this same time, he was appointed as the captain for West Germany
This the golden phase for West Germany and Bayern with Der Kaiser at the heart of it.
He led West Germany to European title in 1972 before following it up with world cup in 1974.
Gerd Muller contributed with crucial goals in finals of both these tournaments
Bayern's dominance in Europe began in 1973-74 season when they clinched their first ever European cup.
Under Beckenbauer, the team went on to win two more European cups in the following two seasons.
Completing a three peat, Franz had won all the major trophies by the age of 29
West Germany also reached the finals of 1976 Euros but lost to Czechoslovakia.
Beckenbauer was once again great in the tournament and named in the team of the tournament.
Soon after, he retired from international football in 1977
With literally nothing left to achieve in Germany, Franz Beckenbauer decided to move to USA.
He signed a lucrative deal in 1977 (at the age of 32) and played for New York Cosmos in NASL.
He was soon joined by his pal, Gerd Muller when he signed for Fort Lauderdale Strikers
Der Kaiser came back to Germany for a two year spell with Hamburger SV.
During this time, he added another Bundesliga medal to his honours.
He finished his playing career after playing another year with his former side New York Cosmos in 1983 at the age of 36
"Franz Beckenbauer could defend like Maldini and dribble like Maradona while having the passing skills of Pirlo and the scoring ability of Beckham when he wanted to"- @DerKaiserBM
Words cannot be put better to describe the GOAT
He is most complete ever
After coming back from USA, Franz Beckenbauer was appointed as national team coach for West Germany in 1984
The team were eliminated in first round and needed a new direction
Within no time, Franz managed to rally his players as he led the team to 1986 world cup final
The team lost to Argentina 3-2 in the final and were left disappointed.
1988 Euro once again saw them losing to eventual winners Netherlands in semis.
But the biggest peak for Beckenbauer came in 1990 when he led West Germany to world win
He became the first player ever to captain and manage a team to a world cup win.
Beckenbauer moved into club management by taking up role at Olympique de Marseille.
He left the team within a year but they went onto win the league title and reached UCL final
The legend came back to Bayern at manager capacity during 1993-94 season when Erich Ribbeck was sacked.
He continued until the end of the season and guided Bayern to a Bundesliga title in four years.
Soon after in '94, he became the president of Bayern Munich
The club saw rapid rise in financial terms due to his incredible management skills.
Beckenbauer once again came back in caretaker capacity in 1995-96 season and led Bayern to UEFA Cup win.
During his tenure as president, he restructured club into a company.
He brought in many changes and got sponsors like Adidas, Audi and Allianz to invest in Bayern.
Franz along with Uli has created a sustainable model for the club.
He worked as president until 2009 as club enjoyed European success for the first time in 35 years during his tenure.
He was voted the second best European footballer of 20th century only behind Johan Cruyff
Der Kaiser remains the only defender to ever win two Ballon d'Ors
He is the only defender to be in GOAT discussion along with other attackers
