Firstly, I want to say something;
This is my first comeback experience with @BTS_twt and I was extremely anxious and excited for 20th. When the tracklist was released, I knew "Blue & Grey" is my song~ the track name itself defines the story of my life. I even recorded singing ++
along V from the snippet played in "BTS IN THE SOOP" before it's release~ i was so much into the song, right from the beginning. Proceeding to the production of "Blue and Grey"~ We all know Kim Taehyung is credited as the 'producer and composer/lyricist', the complete English ++
version was supposed to be a track in his first mixtape. The song is co-composed by Levii, Hiss noise and Ji Soo Park. RM, Suga and Jhope helped V with the Korean translation of lyrics. Before going deep into the lyrics, id like to give a slight outline ~ This is the saddest ++
acoustic guitar ballad in the whole album, yet it's so relaxing and the softest of all the songs in the album. If you need a song to relax your mind and feel peaceful, this song is perfect for you. The lyrics are so deep and relatable ~ it's about losing your drive, something, ++
we all have experienced once in our lifetime, especially in this quarantine period. An artist feels 'blue and grey' when he loses his creative drive, and that's something you feel in his voice~ his voice will show that void. "Blue and grey" is one such song which shows the ++
vulnerable side of the boys. Can you realize, how close they think ARMYs are to them, that they've put something like this in the album? We are really "everything" to them and so are they, to us. 💜 I wonder how it's even possible to possess such feelings for people we ++
never met personally! This is not love, this is something more than that 😌
Coming back to context, the intro by Jungkook and V; the lyrics successfully express how they experienced anxiety, depression and the feeling of isolation during the quarantine period. "Angel" is the ++
relief which they are seeking for over these past months during this pandemic; every morning they wake up with this hope, "today is gonna be a healthy day, no pandemic, a beautiful and fresh world" ~ but everything ends with a 'weary sigh'. "I guess everyone's happy." ~ During ++
depression, according to psychology, a person feels low self-worth or guilty which makes them feel, everyone else in this world are happy except them. And that leads to anxiety where that person becomes desperate to have someone beside them who'll emotionally support them ++
The boys needed us, needed ARMYs to heal them, because in this pandemic, they are unable to meet us, have tours, concerts; everyone is caged inside their own house as a long term prison. The boys wants us to look at them & motivate them because their creativity is fading away ++
"The meaning of the tears reflected in the mirror
My colors hidden in my smile, blue & grey" ~ In the Gobal Conference of "BE", V warned everyone that the song might sound very dark, he assured us that the sound of the guitar is very calm and warm~ so I'll not make it too deep ++
Do you know, why we look at the mirror while crying? While being depressed and loneliness, we seek for comfort; not wanting to be lonely. Our reflection gives a representation of another individual who might be in the room to comfort us. The line, "colors hidden in my smile.." ++
you should know, your face lights up with a beautiful smile~ imagine your face as an empty canvas, your smile are those bright colors which gives beauty to that canvas. Once your smile fades away, the canvas becomes blue and grey. In these two lines "mirror" and "canvas" ++
play a very important role~ "Mirror in art"; which symbolizes "know myself". Aren't these lines too deep? Moving on to verse 2; Suga's rap. In the whole song, you'll notice how Suga is the only person who described 'how closely blue is chasing him from his childhood'. ++
The color 'blue' has been following him very closely~ In the American culture, 'blue' evolved as the symbol of depression, even though blue has a different significance i.e a sense of trust and companion. In this verse, it portraits a sense of loneliness, "blue question mark" ++
symbolizes the cause of his fierceness, which he raps "May be that's why I lived so fiercely". The blue question doesn't disappear anyway, even when he turns back and stand still, the menacing blue shadow swallow him up. Is it his uneasiness) and melancholy? ++
"How can you be such an animal of regret?" ~ doesn't this remind you of "People" from 'D-2' where the lyrics go "Who said people are animals of wisdom?
For me, obviously, we are animals of regret." ~ Suga always brings this topic in his songs, how we might regret being sad, ++
when others are happy, failing when others are succeeding. According to him and this verse, this depression and anxiety is a complete time waste which they'll 'regret' later. But the next line "or may be it's me, who is born of loneliness." ~ these thoughts are very natural ++
when one is depressed. Few days ago, while listening to this song, I was reading "An Existential View of Loneliness" by Michele Carter, I found an article there; it's the perfect situation that goes with the lyrics and mood of the song "Blue & Grey". The last 2 lines of this ++
verse says, he still doesn't know that menacing blue; and hopes he doesn't get consumed by it, he has to find an exit~ which clearly shows how optimistic the boys are, that they'll find the light after this dark pandemic ends. Moving on to the pre-chorus and chorus; ++
"I just wanna be happy//melt me, I'm cold."~ When do you feel cold? When you feel absolutely lonely, no comfort, no companion, no warmth. The pandemic left us in quarantine where we can't meet our companions whose smiling face used to make us happy. Through the lyrics, they ++
wish for this pandemic to get over really soon, so that they can meet their companions, go on tours, do concerts in arenas filled with ARMYs holding ARMY bombs! The next lines touched my heart~ "My numerous hands//colorless echo" ~ which means they are reaching out their ++
hands for innumerable times, yet their hands touch a colorless echo (void). "Colorless echo" symbolizes dull life, which repeats itself. This pandemic has left all of us with a dull life, however we try, we can't get over this. Every morning we switch on the news the headlines ++
say, "Within 24 hours 'this amount' of people are affected by Covid-19." Moving on, "Oh, this ground feels so heavier, I'm singing by myself" ~ melancholic feeling, where you are alone and singing all by yourself.

📌 Acc. to Medical studies, "sadness amd depression share a ++
drop of sensation in the legs and feet"
That was a scientific reason for the ground to feel heavy, but V surely thought it psychologically which stands the same as well. The next lines express their urge to live a free life, a happy one, just like the life they lived before ++
The next three lines are nothing but again the feeling of loneliness; how their heart beats faster while walking down the empty cold streets. "Even now, I still feel it."~ Which reminds us again, the pandemic ain't over yet. The post-chorus~ ++
"Don't say it's okay, because it's not okay"~ Vmin harmonization makes it a much more heart-to-heart interaction of BTS and ARMY. "Please don't leave me alone, it hurts too much." ~ BTS really need ARMY because we are their comfort zone, amd the same goes for us. 💜🥺
Moving on to the next verse, Jhope's slow rap; the road that he always walks on, the light that always shines on him, today all of them feel unfamiliar, because of the pandemic. Empty roads, dim road lights, cold wind blowing, making the atmosphere melancholic. ++
"Did I become too used to it, or did it fall apart?" ~ Aren't we really used to these life? What if someday everything vanishes and we get back to our normal lives? Jhope raps, "this piece of metal is heavy, a grey rhinoceros*** approaching towards him" ~ everything feels so ++
heavy. "I'm just standing there without focus. It's not like me at this moment. I'm just not scared" ~ this is the after phase of depression when you tired. This period doesn't feel like ourselves, we are too tired to focus and at this point of time, we don't even feel afraid ++
of anything in this world, because we are just so tired of losing everything.
📌 Now I'd like to talk about the '***' I gave after rhinoceros. Grey Rhinoceros is like a metaphor which symbolizes danger. You can see a danger coming, but you're helpless, you can't do anything ++
Moving on to RM's verse, the first line "I don't believe in God." makes sense, because Namjoon is an atheist and hw himself said that. "Colorful words makes him nervous"~ like 'cringe, fidget, babble, grunt, etc.' are all colorful words and they confuse him. The next lines ++
"Wide gray areas put me at ease//here there is the grey of million faces" ~ Grey is a perfect mix of black and white- it often has elements of other colors such as blue, green, pink, mauve or yellow within it which lift it and energize it. Too much of the color gray creates ++
sadness and depression and a tendency to loneliness and isolation.
📌 You will see, how RM speaks about "Grey" while Suga spoke about "Blue".
Due to this pandemic, many people are suffering from anxiety and depression which makes their faces grey (filled with sadness). ++
"When it rains, it's my world//I dance on the top of the city." ~ Rain is the symbol of fertility and renewal, that makes RM happy. Every time it rains, they think the world will change, pandemic will end and a new world will take birth. "May the bright days have fog, may we ++
be together always on wet days, And to all the dust here, I raise a toast." ~ All they want is the bright days to come again and feel happy with everyone once again. Lastly, the outro," i just wanna be happier, feel the heat from my hands, I need you more because they are not ++
warm." ~ They need our hands to feel warm. They feel lonely without concerts and tours. Even our hands aren't enough, they need our presence. This songs reflects their desperation to see us live in front of them after the pandemic.
(I'm skipping two lines since I explained them)
"Far in the future, if I smile//I'll say, that's how it used to be." ~ Ofcourse they want to smile big like before when they see us. We will share how we spent our quarantine days together, many moments are waiting for us in our future. Taehyung's mind really amazed me. ++
Lastly, the outro; "As I secretly take back the words that are floating in the air// I fall asleep at dawn, goodnight."
Taehyung's voice singing these lines, hits hard. "Words floating in the air" are the dark aesthetics which happens when you desperately miss something. ++
And we all know how Taehyung sleeps too late at night, almost in dawn, that's why he says Goodnight in dawn. Now I'd like to conclude my analysis thread, I really hope you read, I'm sorry it's too long 😭 it's very much detailed though 😔 ++
This also serves as an appreciation thread of Taehyung. I really wanted to bring out the true meaning of this song so that ya'll don't misunderstand the meaning of this song; it's completely related to psychology. I really want you to understand the sincere emotions in this ++
