OK I'm not one for long threads but #MedTwitter has exploded after this Ayush news, so I have some thoughts and these won't fit in one tweet. Starting with a Poll!
If you were tweeting about this, what was your reason?

I personally was surprised at the reaction. Why? For years I've had Surgeons and ObGyns with Ayurveda postgraduate qualifications in private practice and doing these very surgeries that are listed. Has something changed overnight?

My close competitor so to say is a lady surgeon who did MS after BAMS. She does everything including lap surgeries. Forget lap cholecystectomy she even does lap ectopics. So even gynaecs need to fear. Has had her share of complications, even deaths.

Even ObGyn. Have been called in emergency to assist a bleeding ectopic. Did not refuse on grounds that operating surgeon was BAMS, MD. The idea of a patient dying on table for even my worst enemy is not a pleasant one. So helped out.

So those bothered about the healthcare implications for the public, 2 questions.
1. Are you part of healthcare making policy? Does responsibility for bad outcomes fall on your shoulders?
2. Why is the public not outraging? In fact I see tweets making fun of our outrage.

In short it really isn't my problem and if the government wants to make a fool of themselves, they are welcome to do so and will pay for it come election time. Or reap the benefits if it paid off. I'd prefer to concentrate on my own practice and building my own skills.

As for competition, you will face it anyway. From underqualified or overqualified. Ultimately your own sincerity to patients and your own capabilities and skills will serve you or let you down.

Not just the BAMS, MS, but an MS from your own college will undercut you and take away your patients. In fact Gold shines more when there's a bit of rusty iron next to it. Or seems to. So never worry about an under-qualified competitor.

Finally, has the government really done something new? No! It's just the old policies that have been spelled out in detail. Don't jump at what the headlines might say. In spelling out the procedures and the people who can perform them, in fact might restrict malpractice.

Now if I legally want to complain about my competitor regarding the lap cholecystectomies she does (and complicates), I might be able to do so as there is a written list of what she CAN do and what not. A list that wasn't existent before. Think about then. Then go and outrage.
