2 / We’ve been on the road for days trying to get here.

When we finally arrived yesterday we found 15,000 people in one camp desperately trying to get there hands on food, water, soap and clothes.

Thousands are flooding in every day now. @joostbastmeijer photo
3 / People’s stories are utterly harrowing: “The Amhara [militia] cut off the heads of four children. They cut the babies out of pregnant women. I saw it with my own eyes,” says one man who trekked two days across mountainous terrain with no water to find safety.
4 / The speed people have had to flee Tigray is extraordinary.

“We heard gunshots and bombs,” the 25-year-old nurse said. “We left all of the patients. Some of them were injured soldiers, some of them were women in labour. We left everyone.”
5 / Refugees are walking for days to reach safety along paths once trodden by those fleeing the famine in the 1980s.

More than half of them are exhausted women and children.

They are arriving in the sun baked wasteland of Eastern Sudan with almost nothing
6 / Humanitarians are desperately trying to set up forward bases to get enough food and water to people.

Refugees told us they didn’t eat properly for 10 days.

Some refugee Tigrayan doctors tried to set up a clinic in one of the camps but they’re too exhausted to do much
