Okay, This is going to be a thread about Dante from DMC and his face, and whether or not it's consistently portrayed
Thread begins below:
Thread begins below:
Dante's first appear was DMC1. Here I consider his features to be what future devs used as a base for all of his other appearances
His features in dmc1 consist of a strong jawline, narrow eyes, a greek nose, thin-long eyebrows and a thinner upper lip and thicker bottom lip
I can't really comment much more since this was his original design but I will mention some more of my thoughts when I get to dmc3 Dante
However, I will comment that his in-game model is consistent with these features, only looking slightly off at times due to graphic limitations
Let's move onto dmc2 Dante:
Since this was the 2nd game in the series his design relied the most on a past interation for reference. 3-5 didn't have rely as much on past designs as they all had an idea of what Dante looked like by then

Most of the promo art for dmc2 featured Dante's face, many of them being close ups of high res CG art, this was the first time many people got a good idea of what Dante's face looked like since in dmc1 it was hard to see besides cutscenes
From what I've seen comparing both 1Dante and 2Dante they have the same over all features the only slight differences being that 2Dante appears to have the occasional wrinkle, which makes sense since he is a few years older than 1Dante
Now we move onto DMC3 Dante:
This is Dante's youngest in game depiction to date, Here he is 19.
This means they had to go through the process of deaging Dante from his two previous late 20s to early 30s incarnations

The most notiable thing about his appearance in dmc3 is his bigger eyes and more youthful face. His eyes intrested me the most since in both art and his ingame model they are visible larger than his previous appearances
The game's art style could be why his eyes appear bigger, as it has a more anime influence, but it makes sense that Dante's eyes would narrow with age slightly. He also has wrinkles under his eyes here which is interesting, most likely this was to convey he had double lidded eyes
This feature doesn't seem to be inconsistent however as dmc1 and 2 Dante also had this wrinkle under their eyes
Now to explore how 3Dante lines up with 1Dante and 2Dante age wise is pretty easy. As I stated above the most obvious difference is their ages, 3Dante(19) 1Dante(28) and 2Dante(32-36), 9 years being the biggest gap between any of Dante's ages/depitions
This gap happens between dmc3 and dmc1. 9 years is quite a big gap of time and most people tend to show a difference in their skin, noses and eyes around this time since they have gotten rid of all baby fat in their face and their bodies are properly developed
When comparing 1Dante and 3Dante I see no anomalies in this with them. They did an overall good job of taking 1 and 2 Dante and deaging him to become 3Dante
Now for the part I probably have the most trouble with when it comes to the decisions they made with Dante's face, DMC4 Dante.
Since dmc3 was the most recent and popular of the dmc games at the time it's obvious the devs wanted to jump on and use 3Dante as their base for what dmc4 Dante would look like
And if you're wondering why I haven't mentioned Anime Dante that is because he looks almost exactly the same as 1Dante so there is not much to say there
You're probably wondering why I think 3Dante was used as a base for dmc4 Dante's design, right? Well that comes from the 2006 trailer and dmc4 Dante's overall look and demeanor
DMC4 was originally going to star a much younger Dante than the older 30s Dante we ended up with. This Dante was going to be around 3Dante's age, however, they didn't go with this idea and instead choose to go another direction with the 4th installment
Notably, the first thing most people notice about 4Dante is his stubble. This being the first the time the character was ever depicted with it. Prior to this Dante was always seen clean-shaven, even as a youth
Most of my problems with 4Dante's face stem from 3Dante being the base that they used. Since it had been around 7 years since dmc1 released most of the devs from 2 and 3 were used to Dante's overall features by now, but it's the detail that matters
Since 1&2Dante were not used as references for 4Dante's face this cause some slight inconsistencies with his features. Dmc4 is suppose to take place after 1 and 2 so it surprises me they wanted to use 3Dante,the youngest Dante, as their reference for 4Dante's appearance/attitude
I'm making it sound like they ruined his face but really it's the small but important features of Dante's face that were changed slightly, probably to fit this much older incarnation of his character
I'm very bad at describing small details but it should be apparent when looking at 2Dante and 4Dante side by side
I'm not sure how to exactly describe it but 4Dante's face is slightly off compared to his previous incarnations. Nothing that ruins the design but is noticable if you look at him for long enough. Let's hope someone can one day describe it better than I can
Being developed 11 years after dmc4, dmc5 used scanned in models to depict the characters while trying to keep them in line with their previous counterparts. In dmc5 Dante's face model was Adam Cowie, a British model
I've seen some people say they don't like Cowie being the face of Dante in dmc5. Whether this is a preference to who they find attractive or not is something I won't discuss. I think that Cowie is a great face model for 5Dante and I'll explain why:
5Dante obviously is older than 4Dante, who his design uses as reference, but despite this his features in 5 better line up with his older depictions than 4
Since 5 uses scanned in models this was they first time they used a real person to portray Dante as all his other models were 3D models made by hand. They were good models but 5 takes it to a new level
I ,for one, find it impressive that they found a model that had many of Dante's pre-established facial features. Now, let's compare:
When you look at 5Dante your first impressions probably go to 4Dante, since that was his last appearance but 5Dante Visibly has more of a resemblance to 2Dante compared to how 4Dante did not resemble him much
Dmc2 had the most realistic CG art of Dante until dmc5. While dmc3's CG art is much more impressive than 2's, you can see that it's more stylized than dmc2's more realistic artstyle
