Like, they're making cold-war era gulag jokes about Putin. This regime has not exist for thirty years? The jokes don't work they make no sense.

This is really interesting to me now. As a kid I was told we were at the end of history and American capitalist democracy will prevail for all time.

But now libs and cons are resurrecting China and Russia to mime the cold war again despite everything that's changed.

Oh other fun fact, the gulags ended in the 50s during de-Stalinization. So gulag jokes were dated in the 80s too. They were also not much different in function to American prisons (which hold political prisoners and also mandate forced labor)

Like, communism was one of the first social movements to recognize the social oppression of women and other minorities. A big part of the Cold War was ending segregation so the Soviets couldn't hold that against the US

I didn't even expect to make this thread. I can take a joke that's not the issue. The issue is that the jokes only make sense if you don't understand any amount of history
