Feisty Curation Tips to Create More Joyscrolling on Twitter and Less Doomscrolling During A Dumpster Fire Year: A Thread.
What's important to you? Find voices from those communities. For me, that includes library workers, disabled and chronically ill people, education, tattoos, musicians, gardens, photographers, early literacy and play, urban design, seniors, stuff in my neighbourhood, etc.
What interests and excites you? Follow people in those fields, their colleagues, look for themed hashtag weeks, learn about new people in those fields. For me, it's scientists of all types, and I’ve learned so much cool shit from them in the last year.
Follow voices you don’t know and are unaware of their constant challenges. The BIPOC community, those tweeting about the Black Lives Matter protests, the LGBTQ2+ community, disabled twitter. Obviously there is overlap between many of these communities, because intersectionality.
If you think Black Lives Matter is over, that Canada is super great at reconciliation with Indigenous people and that racism is generally better now, you probably don’t have enough BIPOC voices on your timeline. Seek out more voices.
Follow local youth, parent, education, health advocates in your city/province/state, and help amplify them, as they often don’t have the large platforms that politicians do so may need more help. Follow politicians too, but don’t torture yourself by following the ones you hate.
Follow local artists and businesses that you love and want to ensure they can thrive during a pandemic. You may not be able to spend money on all their things, but you can help promote them.
Follow journalists, news outlets and experts in the field of current events, but check their profile first to make sure they aren’t actually awful. For me this includes people like Ed Yong, epidemiologists, climate change experts, Middle Eastern writers and reporters...
Photo journalists documenting protests and police violence, social justice advocates, those fighting for low income and homeless populations, kickass feminists like Mona Eltahawy, Janis Irwin, Roxane Gay and many more.
Follow hilarious and random accounts too. Dinosaurs, dogs, cats, capybaras, alligators, otters, orangutans, comedians, celebrities, people who only comment with Schitt’s Creek GIFs, whatever brings you joy. Share with silly captions to spread the joy around. Share dad jokes.
If you follow some hilarious people, check to see which accounts they follow, as they may have similarly hilarious taste. The same goes for weird, sarcastic or whimsical people who make you laugh.
Unfollow, mute and block people as needed, but know that you’ll still see some assholic views on your timeline even when doing that, and it’s okay to ignore the assholes.
Resist the urge to retweet the extra loud fucko buckos, because that just amplifies them and brings more trolls your way. This can include everyone from basement trolls to prominent political leaders and staffers.
Take these tips with a grain of salt, whiskey and some wine gums: part of my experience may depend on my weird personality, tendency to share too much information about my life and post numerous self portraits, and I’m not suggesting you become me overnight. That would be creepy.
