I was in a band called Sleepyhead. The other two members, Chris and Rachael are married and still play with a new bass player. Together we put out 4 albums, a couple ep’s and a lot of singles. We were a 90’s band and largely pre-internet- got college radio play- but forgotten
In around 2010 I started to throw together videos for our songs s they would be shareable. I was a photographer before I was in a band, and being in it helped me to make other art- and I also became a filmmaker, and heavily documented the scene. My partner Suki and I
Made the film Half-Cocked which we shot in 1994. It documented the underground music scene we were a part of. When I started making videos I used my photos so the videos would be connected to that time and place. I’m going to post a bunch of those in this thread
My first photo project was shooting in malls. One of the first videos used those images 20 + years later. It was weeks after making my trip across the US that we started Sleepyhead in the fall of 1989. Our first album was called Punk Rock City USA on @SlumberlandRecs
That song was a single we used to tour with that record. https://vimeo.com/345711046  - I also shared the images then & they went wildly viral & ended up being published as Malls Across America on @SteidlVerlag - they didn’t expect so much interest and it sold out before it hit stores
They said they would re-print it but didn’t. Blame them, not me, for the fact that it is out of print. Photo based videos allowed me to combine my music and photography. I’ll post a dozen more here https://vimeo.com/17860168  - this is Solid Gold off of Starduster.
Starduster and Communist Love Sings went out of print so we combined them as Future Exhibit Goes Here which was put out with a cool photo book insert by Drawing Room Records. Sticky is song off CLS https://vimeo.com/17860168  - the footage is of the meadow behind my house.
For the song Starduster I used pix from the birthday party of a friend’s kid https://vimeo.com/54528212
I went back to archival photos for this cover of Salad Days by a minor Threat https://vimeo.com/180514028  - this was a single we made for a tour - we did several full US tours - dozens of 7-10 day Midwest/south tours and one tour of Europe.
My Bloody Valentine was a band we loved - and this was another tour centric single. https://vimeo.com/41769008  -Thorn - it was amazing to play live
https://vimeo.com/128038958  Box For Blue from the last record I played on, The Brighter Shore, combines photos and videos. I made this a few days after Pete Phillips, who played guitar on it, passed away.
That record was recorded by Eric Masunaga who also released it. The production on this song Miss America blows me away. I went back to the photos for this one. https://vimeo.com/60522949
Yer Excellence - from CLS is a moog jammer https://vimeo.com/258440605
After making Half-Cocked and the follow up, Radiation, that documented the music world we started to make documentaries, many of them political. I shot a lot at Occupy and this video for The Mood Swing uses footage from the first anniversary - https://vimeo.com/54377272
In 2012 we travelled to San Francisco to show our film @bfbrooklyn -touring with projects always allowed me to make more work. I couldn’t sleep so went for a long walk and wove that into a video for CB- which is about the Dennis Hopper film with Linda Manz https://vimeo.com/rumur/sleepyheadcb
Cake was made using images from a trip to Seattle and of our kids https://vimeo.com/54601794
https://vimeo.com/182217159  when we made our very first recording we did it with Kramer, the genius behind Shimmy Disk records. It turned out that he was cheaper than any other studio! So our first demo ended up as our first single. It’s a messy romp. I used photos from the session
I shot all of these i@ages on a trip to teach in Iraq in 2013. Like a Girl Jesus is a Game Theory cover. https://vimeo.com/65011803
https://vimeo.com/17583133  this video for Sick of Heaven is related to the loss of my father. We put his ashes behind our house and in the ocean.
https://vimeo.com/54342142  At least at Last uses photos I shot while visiting my mom as she prepared to move out of the house I grew up in. This was over Thanksgiving. 10 months later we decided to move in
There are a few others - this is more of a video for the Versus song B-9 - it’s a trailer for the aforementioned Half-Cocked which basically uses the montage from the middle of the film thats but to the song. https://vimeo.com/255102533
