Let’s talk about Barry. Or better yet, let’s not talk about Barry, because my suspicion is that every time his name gets mentioned and his hurtful and hateful rantings get shared, it emboldens him and his followers. 1/8
I also suspect that every time someone calls for his resignation he digs deeper in his resolve to stay. So, let's talk about what we can do about Barry. Many deride the corporate board model that school boards utilize but these situations are when this model is most useful. 2/8
It protects against the ability of a rogue trustee with views and ideologies that run counter to the purpose of public education, to have their views reflected in the operations of the school district. No individual has power, only the board as a while. 3/8
So, Chilliwack, you have an election coming up for school board. You have lost one of the strongest, most effective progressive trustees in the province. You have a split board right now, this by election will be the most important election in a long time. 4/8
Barry received the 2nd highest number of votes in 2018. He was open about his hurtful, hate filled views and he was elected, by a large %. Right now, instead of focussing on Barry, we must organize and we must come together and be strategic about this by election. 5/8
We must work with laser focus to ensure that the progressive views that were seen in the provincial election are solidified at the corporate board of education table. The balance of power is hanging by a literal thread right now. Do not lose sight of what must be done. 6/8
I can’t vote in this election. My pledge is to use this platform to educate people about important by election information. We must work to make sure that when this by election is over the balance of power at the corporate board table reflectives the students they serve. 7/8
Let's work together to make sure that when this election is over EVERY SINGLE student in Chilliwack knows that the board of education is there to represent them and ensure that they feel safe, welcomed and respected by their school community. 8/8
