Neville grew @AppSumo's customer base from 0 to 750K using only the written word.

His trick? Using damn good copywriting.

In this @CompoundWriting call, @nevmed broke down some key copywriting principles that any writer can use to turn words into action.

Thread 🧵👇
1/ What is copywriting?

Copywriting is writing words to compel others to take a certain action.

When writing copy, you start with the idea of "what do I want them to do" and then craft a message towards that.
2/ The #1 mistake people do when wanting someone to take action?

They offer too many options.

Constrain yourself to think of what's the most important action for people to take.

Look at the @TheHustle's landing page. The only thing you can do is give your email.
3/ How to convince people to give you their email addresses?

If you have amazing content, then people will subscribe.

When people go to your page, think about "what action should I take" and direct people on what to do next.

Think of what you can offer them to subscribe.
5/ How to stand out with your writing?

Try to find a way to what would make you different. Neville stands out by drawing goofy stick figures with his writing.
6/ How to improve your business through copywriting?

Go to the place where it will be the most impactful.

For an Amazon store, it's improving your images.

On a SaaS page, show a gif of your product in action.

For @TheHustle, it was trying out different FB Ads.
7/ As a writer, how can you embody copywriting?

The easiest way is to make people signup to your email or make people follow you on social media.
8/ Reuse your greatest content

Neville set up a ~6-month email funnel when users sign-up to his email list.

Use your best blog posts or most frequently asked questions and turn them into emails to send to your users.

This way you are constantly providing value.
9/ Where to focus your writing

If you're really interested in something, then write about that.

But also write an article about the top three keywords in your domain or top three questions in your industry.
10/ The best copywriting formula
AIDA: Attention, Interest, Desire and Action.

Grab their attention.
Generate interest.
Spark desire.
Lead them to action.

It's extremely helpful when you want to sell an idea to someone. https://twitter.com/nevmed/status/1263107502255878145
11/ What is the give/ask ratio?

Neville has found the perfect ratio of how much content you have to give before asking for something in return.
70% content and 30% sales.

If you give someone 70% good stuff and only sell them up to 30%, they never get mad you.
12/ Why copywriting?

Copywriting is an underrated skill to have.

As Neville says, it's the easiest thing to do but gets you the highest results.

So why not take the time to learn it?
