There is currently no consensus for the grammatical properties or categorial status of 'po' and 'poi', so Matteo will compare them with 'doch'. His hypothesis is that, as 'doch' is, this two are modal particles.

'Doch' function is "re-activates a common ground" in the conversation. It presupposes the incompatibility of two propositions part of the CG.

'Poi' is used as a discourse particle used when neither the speaker nor the hearer can find an answer and that signals that the speaker is expecting the addressee to know the answer of a question
