In today& #39;s world, the term self care has gotten quite popular but some people think it just refers to taking care of yourself only physically, for example, skincare. That is not true, the term self care isn& #39;t only limited to the physical pampering of a person.
So what really is self care and how can it be actively practised? Read on to find out.
What is self care?
Self care is any purposeful engagement or strategy that promote healthy functioning and enhance well being. It is a broad term used to define any activity you can engage in on a regular basis which fosters kindness to yourself.

Self care is also providing adequate attention to your own psychological and emotional well-being. Your own meaning because we are all different, we all have different standards when it comes to our physical, emotional and social needs.
For example an extrovert would need to be around people to meet their social needs while an introvert may prefer staying by themselves.
Some people may think pampering themselves is all self care is about, but it& #39;s not. Self care refers to all the things you need to do to remain heatlthy, reduce stress and feel as mentally well as possible.
This means taking yourself out for lunch can be considered self care but so is cleaning your room. Going out for ice cream is self care but so does spending time with your family.
The only problem with self care is that it is very easy to remember these things when you& #39;re not stressed but when you& #39;re truly stressed, that is, juggling multiple time consuming activities, you often have a hard time remembering the term self care even exists.
Dimensions Of Self Care.
While taking care of our body physically be is an important part of self care, there are other dimensions of self care which includes psychological, emotional, personal, professional and of course spiritual self care.

Physical self care (the body)
Physical self care involves an overall healthy lifestyle that includes eating healthy, getting enough sleep, drinking lots of water, having a working skincare routine and also regular excercises.
You can also consider taking time away from your phones and laptops to rest your eyes and replenish your soul. Now ask yourself, what are you currently doing for your physical self care?
Emotional Self Care (the heart)
Emotional self care includes your relationship with yourself and others. It might also include setting clear boundaries on your time and energy.
Engage emotional boundaries within relationships, address issues or problems as they come up to avoid buildup and also surround yourself with positive people. Give and receive love, spend time with people you love and care about.
Psychological (the mind)
The way you think and the things you& #39;re filling your mind with greatly influence your psychological well being. It may include personal and professional development. Take time out for personal reflection.
Learn your habits, both good and bad then work towards changing what you would like to. Read a book that inspires you or fuels your mind, play puzzles to keep your mind sharp. Ask yourself: Are you doing enough for your psychological self care.
Spiritual Self Care (the spirit)
According to research, a life including religion or spirituality is generally a healthier lifestyle. Spiritual self care might include prayer or meditation or even nurturing your spirit.
You could attend a religious service, practice gratitude and be aware of the non material aspects of your life. Now ask yourself: What are you doing to ensure your spiritual well being.
Assess which areas of your life needs the most attention and self care and then work on it. Remember self care is essential for managing stress and reducing fatigue so it& #39;s important for us to actively participate in it.
