As an international medical graduate, it’s hard to imagine how hard it must be for #residency applicants from abroad this year. COVID disrupted plans for clerkships in the US for many and Visa issues are always a pain. Consider this when interviewing an #IMG for the #Match:
- Training structures vary significantly between countries. Please ask about the kind of clinical experience if you aren’t sure
- Clerkship and course evaluations also can be very different. Again, try to ask a graduate of the same school to help you get a sense of that “B+”
-LORs depend a lot on the culture of the institution/country. A shorter LOR doesn’t mean the applicant isn’t good. Superlatives are not used across the world. Some write “very good” and mean “exceptional”. Verify your hunches and reach out to the letter writer.
- You cannot control all the variables. Take a leap of faith. All those phenomenal IMG professors at your institution are here because someone believed in them 20 or 30 years ago. IMGs bring a different perspective and a different skill set to your training program.
