The scarf worn by Mikasa has very often been described as the red thread of fate between her and Eren. So I am going to analyze the scenes which shows that EM are linked by this red thread which is symbolized by the scarf.
There is a legend in Japan, which originated from China, that two souls destined to meet are linked by a red thread. This red thread never breaks no matter how far apart and how much that thread stretches and contracts. We call it the red thread of fate.
When Mikasa had just been kidnapped after losing her parents, Eren saved her before wrapping her scarf around her. Since then, M has hardly been seen without this scarf. The scarf here is their red thread, the symbol of their relationship initiated by Eren.
When Eren woke up from his fight with Annie, he told Mikasa that he could buy her another scarf because this one was old and damaged. At this point, we can see that Mikasa was rather unhappy with this proposal. It shows how unique and irreplaceable this scarf is to her.
As E and M went to get eaten by a titan, believing this to be their last moments, Mikasa thanks him for all he has done for her. Motivated by her words, E stood up and made this iconic promise :

After that, their relationship changed completely. Eren became softer with M. Let& #39;s note one important thing: He never bought her another one, simply because he recognized the value of this scarf, not only to her but to him as well.
It& #39;s important to clarify that after the timeskip, the scarf was mentioned so much that it can& #39;t be trivial. In 109, as Louise asked M about E, Mikasa was holding her scarf. it has been drawn in a separate box as if to underline its importance.
In 112, when Mikasa mentioned the scarf, Eren lost his temper and harshly told her to put her hands on the table. Since E and M are bound by this scarf and the promise, it was a sticky situation because Eren couldn& #39;t keep it anymore and he knew it.
Much later, and following Eren& #39;s hurtful words in 112, we can see that M, still deeply affected by what E said, leaving her scarf behind. Even Louise was surprised and told M about it. This scene evokes a "separation" from Mikasa& #39;s side. But let& #39;s not forget that the bond never -
breaks. Along the way, when Eren has been sent back to his memories, the scene where he wrapped the scarf around Mikasa was seen again through his point of view, his gaze filled with pain and regret directed towards her.
When M went to L to retrieve her scarf, she revealed to her that E asked her to throw it away. it further shows the value of the promise and the fact that Eren could no longer stay close to M and had to move away. It also shows his inability to let go of himself bcs he cares
At that moment, it& #39;s as if Mikasa had just realized that Eren& #39;s words in 112 were wrong, that he hadn& #39;t forgotten the promise he had made to her and that he cared about it.
about her contrary to what he claimed in 112. In chap 132, even Annie noticed that M was not wearing her scarf and asked her the question right after Eren& #39;s topic was brought up, further emphasizing her symbolism and the fact that EM is linked by the scarf.
We had 2 external points of view concerning the scarf: Louise who was more centered on Eren& #39;s thoughts and that of Annie who was based on the questions of the readers. These are important clues that have been placed to increase our interest in the subject of the scarf which will
have an important role in the future. Presumably, at reconciliation, Eren will keep his promise and wrap it once and for all around Mikasa.
