no nuance november.. heres my contribution. horror that doesnt criticize/subvert/similar to those terms societial norms, oppression, capitalism, etc any combination of that type of thing is just wanting u to find entertainment in suffering that real people face
another hot take. to portray this commentary if its something you dont personally experience, and then graphically portray hate crimes or assault or anything like that ur not making meaningful commentary ur trying to be perceived that way while using real suffering for ur own gain
theres a fine line between oooh scary horror and being exploitative. many use horror to be exploitative, then use the genre as an excuse when the genre is meant to punish the abuser/oppressor rather than the victim/oppressed
because when u get into being exploitative you get various flavors of it. from objectifying the victims suffering to outright sympathizing with the perpetrator to complete apathy to the victims suffering and so on
this isnt no nuance nov take anymore w how much im elaborating but idc. u cant use horror which is meant to subvert and criticize society and oppression to instead maintain societal norms and use it to perpetuate further stereotypes and anti-(various groups) propaganda
WELL THATS A LITTLE AWKWARDLY WORDED DUE TO LIMIT BECAUSE.. u can do that and people HAVE done that which is v important to address. my point is that claiming that doing that is good horror is completely false.
you literally cannot construct good meaningful horror without compassion and kindness. even works that arent meant to be emotional or make you cry. even works that Demand your detachment.. they dont work without the writer having that.
for concrete examples of like everything im talking about. i hate the bye bye man for many reasons but the fundamental concept of it doesnt just maintain societal norms, it excuses it by saying something else than many factors and aspects of human evil are responsible
i think its kinda funny how classical music is used in horror. usually its meant to evoke emotional whiplash between the music and the situation and usually its not well thought out so its a poor attempt at covering up plot failures but it can be done well
im saying whatever i think of in this thread at this point but i want to talk. tma fails very heavily among this just by looking at basira and daisy. nno matter how much u say its "commentary" it cant function that way when the narrative wants u to sympathize w them
