1/ 🚨NEW🚨

For this week’s show, we teamed up with @apmreports to investigate Sequel Youth & Family Services, a for-profit business that is facing troubling allegations of abuse against children who are sent to its facilities. https://revealnews.org/episodes/the-bad-place/
2/ Sequel runs residential treatment centers for children all over the country.

Its residents include children in the juvenile justice system, in foster care and those who have significant mental health problems.
3/ 16-year-old Cornelius Fredrick, Jr. was a resident at Sequel’s Lakeside Academy in Michigan.

He threw a couple pieces of his food at another boy. It's nothing that hasn’t happened in every high school cafeteria in the country.

But what happened afterward was not normal.
4/ A Lakeside Academy staffer shoved Cornelius to the floor and held him there while other employees joined in. They pinned him down for 12 minutes, and they waited another 12 minutes to call 911.

He died at the hospital 2 days later.
5/ The state of Michigan forced Lakeside and another Sequel facility to close. The company has shut down 8 treatment centers since 2019.

But 29 other Sequel centers around the country remain open, and dozens of states still send children to them.
7/ Earlier this year, a video showing the fatal restraint went viral on social media, drawing comparisons to the police killing of George Floyd.

CW: This video contains material that may be traumatizing to some audiences.
