My feed was flooded yesterday with #actuallyautistic trending so I clicked in to see what’s up. @Sia has released a trailer for her upcoming movie called Music. A film about two sisters, one is on the Autism spectrum.
Sia said she done her ‘research’ so I decided to do a thread
Autistic representation in media and tv is already an issue. This is what Sia replies to someone when asked why an autistic actress couldn’t have played the part. So Instead of making accommodation for the actor in which the movie is about you just let her go?
The weird thing is, according to this interview below @Sia mentions none of this but mentions all the big Hollywood actors she had in mind, and maddie, the dancer who has been working with her since she was 11. Listen from 1:05 mins in.

I call bullshit
It not only seems like she didn’t even consider having someone on the spectrum play this role but her three years researching autism are questionable when she talks to the community like this along with having Autism Speaks on board. I’ll talk about them in the next tweet
Autism Speaks are heavily rejected by the Autism community as they are known to promote therapies and cures that are harmful and traumatic for autistics. This isn’t a new thing and had @sia engaged with the community she would have realised this
@Sia’s reply to an Autistic Actor
It’s not your place to be annoyed about it this. If people are trying to tell you something is wrong it’s for a good reason, and you should listen. There’s already enough bad representation as it is and this unfortunately is another one of those things
I can safely say this does not represent or relate to me. I find it cringy and almost inspiration porn-y. I wish people would stop looking at us as this sweet special little things with funny quirks. We’re people
