So, I heard a local rumour about some Second World War history in my town, I went out for a walk yesterday to see what I could find...
Stanley Road, a row of terraced houses. Still visible is the writing from the family ‘welcome home George’ above the door. In fact there were two George’s that the families would welcome home after VE Day in ‘45
The other George lived in the end terraced house (nearest). He had served with the 6th Airborne Division dropping in on D-Day, fighting in the Ardennes and crossing the Rhine. The other George in the far house (furthest) serving in the 8th Army in Africa, Sicily and Italy.
Not sure on what date this photo was taken but appears the house has been unoccupied for many years and still is today. 75 years on since VE Day, the memories of the Second World War live on around us. Just hope this doesn’t get knocked down.
I would love to see the brick removed and placed into the museum and kept for future generations and the heritage of our town. Probably unlikely to be removed successfully in once piece though.
