You Watanabe, and why shes the best support character Aqours could have ever asked for, a thread:

I’ve tried looking into every other character and not one of them are as deep or appealing to me as You. Let me explain why

You to me is a character who finds herself struggling to come to terms with a new reality. All her life she was exceptionally talented and ahead of her peers. She only had her best friend, who she also one uped at everything, by her side. It was just the two of them.

But when Aqours came around, You’s reality was challenged. She lived her whole life with this one friend she cared about even more than herself, but now she’s in a group where everyone has a part to play, and she’s not playing hers.

You is so busy trying to be what she THINKS everyone else wants her to be that she forgets to be who SHE wants to be. She wants what’s good for Aqours but not what’s good for her. She values the ones she loves more than herself, and that’s why she can’t understand her feelings.

It took the help or Mari, and the one who changed You’s reality forever, Riko, to help You realize her true feelings. She is a member of Aqours just like everyone else, and she has a part to play.

She needs to be You Watanabe the costume designer. She needs to be You Watanabe the swimmer. She needs to be You Watanabe, a school idol. Her character is all about adapting to change, and how to come to terms with those feelings of the new reality you can't quite understand yet.

This to me is why You is such an amazing support character. She's not just "haha funny cuck" she's her own girl who's just trying to be the best friend she can be. You wants what's best for her and her friends, but she's blinded by own her love for her friends.

Learning how to stop putting your own feelings to the side and remembering that you deserve to be happy just like everyone else is something I struggled with a lot. Her character arc makes me cry everytime because of how human she is.

People will complain about "Oh she didn't get enough screentime" or "Oh she was treated unfairly" which are both simply not true. You is a support character, and her whole arc is about how to be supportive but also not disregarding your own feelings.

You Watanabe is best support character Aqours could've ever asked for. I hope this thread has informed you of why.
