Perhaps one of the most mourned losses of Victoria Park is the lido which opened in May 1936 to replace the bathing lakes. An initiative of Herbert Morrison, the lido was said to be able to hold 1,000 people, and in line with the founding of the park aimed to improve health.
Victoria Park lido opened with some fanfare the lido allowed mixed gender swimming & featured terraces for spectators and sun-bathers, showers and refreshment facilities. Here some of the display swimmers at the opening in 1936.
Victoria Park Lido was located on Grove Road (the approximate outline now to be found as the car park mostly occupied by film and TV location vehicles) with a fairly low key entrance.

Thanks to ( @ArchivesHackney) we have some fabulous aerial shots of Victoria Park showing the lido.
The Victoria Park Lido was badly damaged during WWII, repaired and reopened in 1952, but following further damage after the Great Storm of 1987 & financial pressures the Victoria Park Lido was demolished in 1990. See here in the 1970s...
