Controversial opinion: I don't think Christians are necessarily politically homeless. I also don't think either major US party offers Christians a legitimate political home. & I don't think this is because we Christians are so marginalized. I think it's because we screwed up.
There's no particular reason why one party shouldn't offer care for the poor, weak & marginalized including the unborn, racial justice & equality, upholding of biblical sexual ethics, religious freedom, etc, etc. We just haven't really asked for it.
People sometimes say that as soon as the Roman emperor Constantine became a Christian & Christians went from being a persecuted minority to having access to political power, things all went horribly wrong. That's actually not true.
As @johnpauldickson demonstrates in his forthcoming book, Constantine didn't force Christianity on the empire. He basically upheld religious freedom.
& in a culture where abandonment of babies (mostly girls) was commonplace, Constantine passed laws protecting women from unwarranted divorce & offering provision for children born into poverty, using churches “as the welfare distribution centres for this program.”
Constantine then issues a complete ban on killing infants in AD 374. He cared to address the underlying problems that were causing mothers to abandon their babies, rather than just banning them from doing so.
Not to say that Constantine was the perfect model of Christian leadership. He wasn't. If you're looking for that guy, his name is Jesus. But caring about all the things the Bible says we should care about isn't impossible. We just need to really try.
