Social media filters’ affect on body dysmorphia and mental health in general should probably be talked about more...
I would assume that on any given day, the average young person sees themselves through their phone camera more than they see themselves in a mirror. There’s something very dangerous and saddening about the fact that people have become estranged from their own true reflections.
Aside from the universal psychological damage, it’s particularly violent toward Black and fat people’s mental health because the filters are designed to accentuate thinness and lighten complexions. I really think their should be a movement to boycott.
Not to pivot but I don’t think we can adequately address the harm these filters have caused without addressing the renewed popularity of cosmetic surgery and body modification among people 25 and under.
I’m not one to judge other people for getting work done; there are a myriad of legitimate medical and personal reasons for why a person would seek body modifications. BUT these procedures can be dangerous especially when you opt for a cheaper route with less reputable doctors.
^which most young people do, because the expenses are otherwise astronomical. I read somewhere that plastic surgeons have begun to call it “Snapchat dysmorphia” because so many clients are using altered selfies as references. I’ve also seen some really scary botched stories...
Anyway y’all... this is lowkey a public health crisis. What will we do? I vote for boycott 🙋🏽‍♀️
