Good morning, it’s been 22 days since the UK’s human rights watchdog found Jeremy Corbyn and his office guilty of discriminating against Jewish people to the extent that they broke the law and the former Labour leader has yet to acknowledge personal responsibility or apologise.
There is an organised lobbying effort by his allies inside the party and trade unions to restore the whip even in spite of his refusal to apologise. There is a Labour civil war taking place almost entirely because his own supporters would rather fight a war than demand an apology
Instead they just demand people “move on”. Yes, the same people who denied that there was ever a problem large enough for the EHRC to intervene now want everyone to move on and forget about it even as Corbyn doubles down on rejecting responsibility.
This argument has lost all sense of reason and his supporters aren’t even acknowledging he explicitly rejected the findings of the report 3 weeks ago and that he has yet to retract that rejection.
You “move on” after contrition, after justice, after trust is restored, not before. They want to crowbar him back into the party without so much as an apology. They show solidarity with the perpetrator and hostility towards the victims. It’s totally unacceptable.
The first part of implementing the EHRC report is by making sure all agents of the Labour Party accept its findings in full, especially those responsible for breaking the law. Don’t accept the findings? Leave the party. That’s the bare minimum. That’s the starting point.
It’s been 22 days, Corbyn has neither accepted his responsibility, accepted the findings or apologised. He did wait 35 minutes to claim the problem was exaggerated by his opponents after being found guilty of unlawful discrimination though. He has not even apologised for that.
