American media never reckoned with the disastrous effects of the 2011 Libya intervention, which is part of the reason Tony Blinken, Susan Rice, Samantha Power and Michèle Flournoy never faced any consequences for their actions and are poised to lead the US war machine again
The war in Libya was disastrous on so many levels. It never actually ended and has morphed into a protracted civil war that has killed 10s of thousands and become a proxy for fighting between France, US, Turkey, Russia, UAE, Qatar and Egypt
Black migrants were treated terribly under Gaddafi but their conditions have gotten even worse since 2011, as evidenced by the widespread reporting on slave markets in 2017
The war in Libya contributed to destabilizing the Sahel, with the rise in jihadist groups' power and reach sharply increasing in the wake of 2011. This in turn has had catastrophic consequences for people in the region, displacing 100s of thousands and depriving them of school
The void of state authority in Libya gave way to some of the largest movements of people coming to Europe in decades, which culminated in what American and European media called "the migrant crisis." 10s of thousands of mainly African people died in the Mediterranean
And thousands more died in the Sahara along the way. That loss of life was caused primarily by European policy in the wake of the disastrous war they themselves started
When more Africans and Syrians came to Europe after 2011, European support for more openly racist far right politicians rose significantly. Those politicians are either in power today, have raised their profiles, and/or had their policies adopted by the center left and right
The intervention was pushed hard by Sarkozy, who had taken 50 millions euros from Gaddafi to finance his 2007 presidential election campaign and is facing charges and an ongoing investigation for that illicit funding
No American politicians have been held accountable for the really terrible consequences that their Libya intervention caused. Likewise, there has been almost no media introspection despite the fact that many papers cheered on the war and ignored its calamitous outcomes
Now we have the architects of that intervention about to take power again in the Biden administration's inner circle
