On its surface, Commando is the apotheosis of the 80s action movie. Macho American body-builder vs faceless bad guys who can't shoot straight. But there is so much more!
The key is in the names. Let's start with our lead: John Matrix. John is derived from the Hebrew Johannes: "God Has Been Gracious". Hm, interesting. What about Matrix? It has several definitions, but one stands out: "a mold in which something is cast or shaped". Or... incarnated?
That's right. John Matrix's very name means, with very little squinting, "The incarnation of God's Grace". Yes: Matrix allegorically represents Jesus.
Don't buy it? Take a look at his establishing shot. Bearing a wooden beam?
And look, he literally has a halo!
Then there's his daughter, Jenny. Jennifer means "My Fair One". One can't help but be reminded of Song of Songs 2:10, where God's pursuit of humanity is summarized. "My lover speaks to me, arise, my fair one, and come!"
She represents humanity in Edenic splendor.
With ice cream.
How about his adversary, former comrade Bennett? Bennett derives from Benedict, meaning "Blessed". An old blessed ally, fallen from grace, who tries to gain power over his enemy by seizing his beloved child?
Bennett, obviously: the devil.
One last name of note: Bennett's slimy henchman, Sully. Arnold kills him by dropping him off a cliff. Sully means "damage the purity or integrity of; defile". What defiles us? Sin. But God's grace casts sin into the abyss.
The final confrontation occurs underneath Bennett's tropical island. I always used to wonder why a Caribbean island's furnace was running full power. It's because the battle to save humanity occurs on Satan's turf - Jesus descends into hell itself to save us.
Finally, Matrix and Jenny return to the surface, where Matrix's friend Kirby has finally arrived to help. Kirby, by the way, means "Church Settlement".
Matrix delivers some parting instructions to his church, boards his seaplane, and ascends into heaven.
Now, as with any allegory, there are some gaps here and there. But this holds up as well as anything short of Narnia.

Huge if true.
