Apps/resources/tips I'd recommend for all students and young people in general!
Me and my flatmates use this app a lot! At the end of the day, cafes and restaurants have to throw out what was on display and through this app, you can buy a lot of it real cheap! It's perfectly good to eat often for days after
This app is really what got me through exams. For every set time you stay focused without going on your phone, it grows a plant and adds to your forest!
Tip for accomodation: get a dehumidifier for your room. It really is a good investment as often in halls it gets super humid which can lead to a range of issues.
Rooms can be plain and hard to decorate with all the restrictions and lack of space, so my friends and I always cash in our free prints on these apps to personalise our rooms
This is for all my stem students out there- this app is a lifesaver
Tip: always seal up food in plastic boxes! Bugs often find their way into accommodation (see humidity) so it's important to do what you can
Also keeping your room clean is super important, again BC of the bugs!! Invest in some alcohol spray which can k1ll the bugs
Also always keep a glass handy to catch the bugs (or to hand to a flatmate whilst you run)
Hide your sponges! You never know who you're gonna be living with but even when you do, some people really can be annoying in this department. People often use others sponges and make them dirty. Especially important for those with allergies or vegetarians/vegans
Bring as little as possible. It's okay to buy once you're there but the rooms are so small you really won't fit much
Continually make lists! To do lists, shopping lists, study lists, phone numbers/contacts.
Be nice to the staff! This year especially a lot of people in quarantine are causing the staff a lot of trouble. We're now besties w the bin man and he comes round to fix so many problems! He fixed our sinks and showers just a few days ago!
It's important to realise that they are people who will respond well to politeness. He says we're the only flat he's seen (at 11am) who isn't full of drunk people shouting at him to fix stuff... It's always worth being nice!
Don't rely on the cleaners. You'd be surprised how dirty a kitchen can get in a week in student accommodation.
Keep a jacket and shoes by the door always, fire alarms are way too frequent to miss that.
Bring a fan! I'm on the top floor and heat rises! The windows don't open either, so a fan is really a necessity.
Prioritise small bowls and plates, we always share food and try each others so these things are a must!
If you're someone with a large following on Instagram or Tiktok, try unitaskr! My friend gets sponsorships from there all the time!
Leave your door open! I know people in flats who have never even spoken to their flatmates, so make efforts to speak w them
Flat meetings are also somewhat necessary, to iron out any issues within the flat. Things can build up over time when living in confined spaces, so in order to get along its best to have constructive discussions
Games nights, movie nights, drinks nights; whatever it is you enjoy, it's especially important in quarantine to socialise with your flatmates. Can't see anyone else rn, after all.
Disclaimer: this is what myself and my flatmates have found so far. I don't know how many of these are relevant across the board.
I'll probably come back to this thread later but for now I have class :)
