We are nation of such magnificent composers. Music runs in our blood as a nation. Our choral music tradition is rich in history and carries so much cultural knowledge. The depth of insight and wisdom carried through is often underestimated.
I am reminded of a beautiful composition by Kwanaite Mashile called "African Renaissance". Composed circa 2003/2004. I think it might be available on SAMRO. Oh wow what a piece. He also did work on Mozart's Requiem Sanctus. Utterly incredible!!!
One cannot of course forget JP Mohapeloa, oh what a Colossus. Senqu, my favourite! The exquisite arrangements, invoking the native tongue with bold and beautiful harmony. I now recall he even got awarded an OBE nogal for his contribution to music.
Another giant is Ntate Michael Masote, who ensured orchestral music flourished in Soweto. Giving rise to so many leading lights in choral and classical music. I recall his translation of Handel's Messiah into our 11 official languages. Oh a stunning feat!
Then there is the contribution of the illustrious Richard Cock, absolutely steadfast and immersed in choral and classical music. Building platforms for growth and preservation of our musical heritage. A national treasure.
Oh I am getting carried away. So much to say about our choral and classical music heritage. Then there is our jazz heritage. Oh not just beginning in the 20th century but much earlier. I need to do more research on these topics!
Let me end this thread with a beautiful gem. Mme Sibongile Khumalo leading the charge...
