anywho, let’s talk about problematic hyperfixations, what’s ableism and what’s not when interacting with a person who has one, a thread
So first of all: hyperfixation is a symptom of neurodivergency in which someone is completely immersed in a subject or media, and it could be anything: that’s where problematic hyperfix’s come in.
A problematic hf can be anything with media that is commonly criticized for being bigoted, or constituting or presenting a problem or difficulty to others affected by it. Now it’s important to remember that having a problematic hf is not the same as choosing to be interested in +
Bad media, it’s simply an uncontrollable reaction to having neurodivergency. What does this mean for the person who has one?
Having a problematic hyperfixation means:

1 - the person is not in control of the hyperfixation
2 - the person cannot magically stop partaking in the media
3 - the person is still subject to criticism, not solely because of their hyperfixation, but what they chose to do with it
What does number 3 mean?
it means that people are allowed to be uncomfortable and are allowed to chose not to interact with you because of it, this is not ableism, a common misconception- because while it’s uncontrollable it does not mean the person isn’t able to not promote +
The content. If you chose to promote problematic content, hyperfixation or not, you are choosing to aid in the bigotry and criticism of that media (Which directly goes against marginalized groups) You can have a problematic hf without promoting it however
This is includes but it not limited to
- calling out writers when they chose to include bigoted content
- not actively saying everyone should enjoy the content
- continuing to criticize the content
- allowing people who are uncomfy witn your hf to be uncomfy
Hope this helped, if I’m spreading any misinformaction please do let me know !
