I'm not for the total abolition of the police. I think the police do serve a useful function as keepers of public safety, though what they do in the name of "public safety" is grossly wrong.
As an example, I believe investigations of violent crimes are one such function. I know the realities of the poor numbers the police put up when it comes to solving crimes and actually getting justice for victims.
This definitely needs improvement. But it also is important enough, to me, to warrant keeping the police. However, I believe the role of beat cops is pointless (and that presently their job is to intimidate). Police investigations need detectives. Not beat cops.
Police don't need to be used as crossing guards, nor to run traffic lights. Shift these functions to departments of transportation or similar groups.
The same can be said for enforcement of traffic laws. Shift these functions to departments of transportation.
In short, drastically reduce what police are supposed to cover. Keep them around to deal with violent crimes. And even then, pair them with social workers and other professionals.
I'm not saying I'm right. I'm saying this is how I feel and I acknowledge that as a white man, my interactions with the police are far and away nicer than my siblings of color. Please feel free to reply to this thread.
