Hearing lots of talk re: extending olive branches to Trump supporters and for those of us who voted blue to try to reach out to those who voted red. I was raised conservative, by Trump voters, and I& #39;m here to explain why that& #39;s a counter-productive waste of resources (thread).
Trump supporters like my parents look like completely respectable people. They are bound by "political correctness" in public, which they resent, and part of what they love about Trump. But at home, the ugliness is on full display. "Raghead," "N*****," "Driving While Oriental..."
were commonplace in my home. Complaints about "women drivers," "women bosses," being "on the rag" if a woman had a complaint, were just a few of the ways male superiority was enforced. Western (white) civilization, to them, is the only one that matters. I remember....
...arguing with my father and brother on whether all of Africa and India even deserved to EXIST (to them, Africa is just one big country). Their position was that the world would be improved if they were wiped out. They believe the deaths of BILLIONS of people would be IDEAL.
They are ignorant of history, deeply racist & misogynist and worship "survival of the fittest." They hold deeply resentful and fearful opinions of other people, especially BIPOC, who they view as mostly criminals, naturally inferior and ultimately unworthy of any consideration.
When Obama was elected, they went over the edge. I walked into the living room to watch my mother, watching him on Fox News, muttering under her breath about "hang em all." She meant ALL BLACK MEN. They HATED Obama. That hatred drew them to Trump, because he was the ANTI-OBAMA.
They don& #39;t value compassion or kindness, unless it& #39;s towards themselves. They consider it weakness, along with all the talking that liberals do about feelings and "blah blah blah." They have ZERO respect for differing opinions. They value strength, wealth and power. TOUGHNESS.
They hoard guns, ammo & dried food for a reason. For decades, they& #39;ve been hearing about the "violent Blacks" who want to break into their homes, the "lazy immigrants" who want to steal their taxes and jobs, the "baby-murdering women" who expect to be paid like a (superior) man.
They& #39;ve been preparing for the "end times" for a very long time. The nature of these end times vary but the expected result is the same: only those with guns will survive. Only the toughest will prevail. All the soft lefties will perish and the paranoid right will be vindicated.
These people BELIEVE Alex Jones. They believe what they choose to believe, they don& #39;t need facts or evidence. Many of them are religious because many among the religious right are used to operating without evidence or logic. They operate on "right" and "wrong," which THEY decide.
They have been preparing for, expecting and even HOPING for an opportunity to use violence to assert their "natural" authority over everyone else. Their heroes massacred Native Americans to make America Great! They think FORCE is necessary and justified IF they benefit from it.
One of the biggest factors is their astounding ignorance. Many of them, like in my family, have never left their comfort zones. They only travel to resorts, they watch the same shows and movies (with a strong white male lead!), they read only what will reinforce their beliefs.
They don& #39;t have compassion or respect for people who aren& #39;t like them and they won& #39;t develop it after a bitter defeat in which their candidate WON& #39;T EVEN CONCEDE. They are digging in because they went all-in for Trump. There& #39;s no pretending they "didn& #39;t know" what he was about.
If there are Trump supporters who wish to redeem themselves and be accepted back into the roles they held previously, IT IS ON THEM to do the work to earn it. The BURDEN of the work needs to be on them. They need to hear their favorite phrase, "personal responsibility," on repeat
The focus, energy and resources now need to be focused on all of us who have been victimized, marginalized and ACTUALLY HARMED by this horrible administration, its supporters, and its sympathizers. WE WORKED HARD AS HELL to save this democracy, and now we need to rebuild it.
Any talk about reaching out to Trump supporters or giving any consideration for their feelings is KEEPING THE SPOTLIGHT ON THEM. It& #39;s making THEM the most important part of this story when they are the villains who nearly destroyed it! They need to WORK to earn back our trust.
