Can we actually talk about this vid for a sec? Because a lot of people such as singers and music producers who react to BTS for the first time point out how long a lot of their songs are, since many songs these days are around 3 mins long. Lemme explain.+ https://twitter.com/joonshotline/status/1325494013504446464
Since we're in the digital era of consuming music, streaming is the easiest way to support an artist and even easier to do with a shorter song. The shorter a song is, the more you can stream it. And the higher streams it has, the higher it charts.+
Take the most recent chart-topper on the BB Hot 100 list—Positions, which is 2 mins and 52 secs long, not even 3 mins. Longer songs generally don't accumulate enough streams to compete, and so tend to place lower on the charts, even if the song is genuinely good.+
And because of this, some people take advantage of song length and release songs that are intentionally shorter to increase their streams and chart higher. It's a common industry tactic. Shorter songs are also prime for radioplay, while longer songs are often overlooked.+
But take a look at BTS. I've screenshotted their last four title tracks in chronological order, and you'll notice that all of them are over 3 mins and 30 secs long. Half of them are over 4 mins long. All of them have also debuted within the top 11 of the BB Hot 100 chart.+
Their MVs are even longer, and YT views are something that are really important in Kpop because it can help with exposure. Because again, longer MVs => less streams => not on trending page => less exposure. A very simple formula that can mean life or death for some groups.+
So when I hear people point out that BTS' songs/MVs are super long, it actually makes me proud because it means they're not interested in altering their work for material/monetary gain. They make their music however long they want to make it without catering to radio.+
It shows that BTS prioritize their craft and will not cheapen it for anybody. And that passion is what has stumped the US industry for years. Because some Western artists will use all these tactics to chart yet BTS still comes out on top. That's some crazy sht.+
But anyway that's all I wanted to say. I've been thinking about it for some time but hadn't gotten around to making a thread about it.
Just in case something happens to the account I rtd, here is the vid so future people won't be confused as to what I'm quote tweeting.
