WHY GHOST TOWN IS KANYE’S BEST SONG.
I know I used to always say Runaway was Kanye’s best song but after a lot of re-listens, I’ve realized his best song really is Ghost Town and here’s why. This is inspired by a comment I saw on YouTube, and I thought I’d expand on it.
This song samples two tracks, “Some Day” by Shirley Ann Lee and “Take Me For a Little While” by The Jesters. I don’t think this was a coincidence. (CONTINUED...)
Kanye’s choice of samples was specific to the meaning and names of these samples. “Some Day” symbolizes hope of better days to come, while “Take Me For a Little While” symbolizes the grasp and how much Kanye’s bipolar disorder takes over his life.
Cudi’s verse represents the lows of the bipolar disorder. He interpolates the chorus of “Take Me for a Little While.” Cudi sings about feeling lonely and trying everything to feel loved.
The lows of bipolar disorder make you feel the consequences of your actions and decisions, and can also make you feel lonely.
070Shake’s verse represents the highs and mania of bipolar disorder. She sings about being hurt so much in the past, that she now feels free and can do whatever she wants because the pain does not effect her anymore.
This perfectly shows the highs and mania of bipolar disorder that will cause you to make reckless decisions regardless of the consequences.
Lastly, if we look at the arrangement of the songs and even Kanye’s lyrics we can see the recklessness and sadness he feels as well as how the lows (Cudi’s verse) comes before the highs (070 Shake’s Outro).
All in all, this is an anthem of freedom and better days to come. It also perfectly shows us what it’s like to live with bipolar disorder.
