Had an amazing walk with my dog along the ocean. Gale force winds blowing south. Tons of riders going for Strava PRs. Saw this one pod of Big Orange dudes really going for it—maybe 30-32—and looked out to sea and saw a squadrons of pelicans, barely flapping, going way faster.
FWIW I love pelicans. They remind me of old guys with pot bellies you see at the start of the Paris Roubaix sportive. They look ungainly and then they crush you and actually look purpose-built once they're moving.
If I have any pelican experts following me, I'm curious to understand the way they jump on crazy tailwinds. Like most of the pelicans in coastal LA seem to live in the Ballona wetlands and yet they seem eager to joyride far away even if they have no way to get home soon.
