I’ve had a few people reach out to me in the last few weeks asking how I got into the sports media industry 📝

I’m quite proud of my journey so far so here is a thread explaining how I got to where i am today! ⬇️
1. I always knew Uni wasn’t the route I wanted to go down, so after leaving college with some (okay) A levels , I began studying for my NCTJ diploma at @HighburyJournos in September 2017!
2. I had been blogging about the NBA for a while, but wanted some first-hand work experience in the basketball industry.

So I reached out to my local (45 minutes away) @BBLofficial team - @surreyscorchers!
3. Naturally, lots of aspiring journalists ask sports teams for work experience.

Sports teams get LOTS of people expressing interest to volunteer which is great!

As a result, I was turned down by the Scorchers to do work experience four times!
4. I didn’t let this set me back, and instead I started reporting on Scorchers games for the local newspaper - the Surrey Advertiser!

The media team at Scorchers then saw these reports, realised I knew what I was talking about, and took me on for work experience!
5. I had a fantastic year of work experience with the Scorchers while studying for my NCTJ diploma!

The marketing team at @Surreysportpark at the time were class and I learned so much - big shoutout to @christof88 , @RyanMorganMedia , @bekahmae93 and @nathans999!
6. I finished my NCTJ qualifications in May 2019 and landed a job at Solent News & Photo Agency after some successful work experience with them.

They are a news agency that cover national news stories for the national papers!
7. I spent 18 months covering national news with a great team!

From Novichok to countless court cases - Solent was a huge learning curve in developing my skills alongside some top top journalists.

Seeing my work across the national papers each day was very rewarding.
8. In August 2019 a position opened up at Surrey Sports Park to become the Fan Engagement Coordinator for @surreyscorchers and @SurreyStorm - which I applied for!

I made it to the interview stage and was offered the job!
9. Since October 2019 I have been working full time in the professional basketball and netball industry - it really is a dream come true and I absolutely love it!

Countless memories already, and many more to come in the future I hope!
10. My best advice to sports journalists looking to get into the industry:

- Rejection is common and don’t take it personally - you cannot expect to be given opportunities just because you asked.

- Think outside the box

- Be relentless

And enjoy the journey! 😄
