I remember once in elementary school we had to give a presentation about our heritage. Everyone in my class talked about England, Poland, Germany. It got to me and I presented about my heritage from Japan. I remember someone laughed bc “my eyes didn’t” *pulls eyes to the side* 🧵
We had to talk about a sport from the culture and everyone laughed bc the sumo attire looked like a diaper. When I started to apply to schools and jobs, I never knew what box to check for my race. Checking white made me feel like I was hiding half of my family.
Checking Asian made me think of the moment when people laughed at me for not looking Asian enough. I’ve come to accept that I am mixed, and that is a valid and real place to be. I have both heritages and I cherish them both.
With all this said, you all know I have serious disagreements with @KamalaHarris and have been pretty vocal about her shortcomings. I see things like “couldn’t we have picked a better female candidate to be the first one?”
Hey, I’m all for getting behind a flaming leftist woman to be our first female president. You all know I’ll be there to make the calls and lit drop, whatever is needed. But when I see people celebrate that this particular barrier has been broken, I get it.
We have had white dudes over and over and over and over, and I disagree with *all* of them. There is no previous president I think was perfect or even close. And here we have a mixed WOC who will be our first non white dude VP.
We have a lot of work to do with her and with Biden. They aren’t fighting for our agenda and that sucks. I won’t rest. But can I just say that I wish elementary school lauren thought it was normal and ok to be mixed and eventually run for office someday?
