Obviously, I don't intend to exonerate or discount Isaias's role but the historian in me thinks @RAbdiAnalyst pinning the entire turmoil in the Horn of Africa on Isaias Afwerki is a misdiagnosis of a very complex reality. It is reductionist, doesn't consider the longue durée https://twitter.com/RAbdiAnalyst/status/1325414339659132935
historical dynamics in the region, & elides the agency, motivation & the more crucial role of political actors in #Ethiopia and elsewhere in the Horn. The basic historical and counterfactual question one should ask are how much of what is happening in #Ethiopia is new &
would things be different sans the Isaias Afwerki factor? #Ethiopia is repeating what it has always been doing throughout its modern history: dealing with internal differences through brute force with a varying degree of foreign involvement in the mix.
