We can hold space for two ideas at once

1. Defund the Police movement can lose voters
2. Defund the Police movement can gain voters

#1 is an assumption conveniently taken as the only truth
#2 has data behind it. Look at Dem registration spike after George Floyd (h/t @tbonier) https://twitter.com/MeetThePress/status/1325447280321769473
This dynamic of competing ideas will exist as long as there's a big tent party that includes everyone from abolitionists, to socialists, to conservatives.

But somehow, only theories that appeal to the latter are accepted as true even in the face of evidence that shows otherwise
Appealing to centrism and conservatism when other truths are evident about the party's base is a pathology

Frankly, I'm reluctant about a Biden presidency because he's a chief architect of this Third Way sickness. It's how we got the crime bill and threats to social security.
So if you plan on holding Biden "accountable," please wrestle with the fact that it will require changing the philosophy of the entire party leadership, which may or may not happen in our lifetimes, quite frankly.
I know I went from defund to 100, but this is so on brand with Democrats and a myriad other positions, from Medicare for All to the Green New Deal, and if any moment should have shaken this stubborn faith to centrism it should be this one, but alas
FYI if y'all tryna argue in the comments, I'll be writing more about this, with data, and that will be my only response bc I got other shit on my agenda today
And obviously defunding the police is the moral and practical thing to do. This specific thread is only about the people who obsess over messaging and losing moderates.
