The FB´s is often looking to get in behind the opposition and attack the space in front of them and stretch the play. Because of the lack of aerial threats in the team the FB´s do intend to play a pull-back or try to hit a low-cross into the box.
It does not matter if it is on the wing or through the middle, the attacking principles remain always the same in the end. Gladbach attack is built on fast interchanges with quick passes, usually one two between the teammates and constant switching positions of the attackers.
How could Rose implement his philosophy into this current Utd team? Let's first start with formations . UTD could play in a 4 or 3atb depending on the opposition. Watching this UTD play . OGS has not been able to implement certain things which may have led this inconsistently
One of the first things Rose would do is implement into this squad is his build up play. We saw United use a 3atb post lockdown in the build-up but for some reason they do not use it anymore. I can only emphasize that this is VERY important especially against teams who press high
If you can bypass the first line of pressure there will be spaces BTL to exploiting. For an example, United's first game of the 2020/21 season was at home against Crystal Palace and I noticed that they switch up the build up 2 CB´s instead of a 3 atb which was not beneficial.
In the build-up you want to gain overload on the opposition to either bypass the first line or help with ball progression and if you do not overload , the transition between defending to attacking will not be as smooth as it can be. 1/2
Scott McTominay or Paul Pogba has to drop in between the CB´s to gain overload and provide a easier part to play through Palace. If this is done correctly, TFM would be higher up in the pitch and strecth the play and provide width. 2/2
Watching UTD play under OGS, most people have noticed that they struggles against low blocks and that comes down to 2 reasons . 1/2
The width provided by the FB´s has not been good or they did not stretch the pitch enough to open the opposition defences. The lack of movement in the final third has not been sufficent enough. 2/2
As Marco Rose´s gladbach is a lethal counterattack team, the team also has tools to break down low blocks through their directness in the attack by using the FB´s and midfielder to create overloads in the final third.
Conclusion:
Marco Rose has done an excellent job with this Gladbach team and has turned this team into one of the most lethal counterattacks in Europe. By their pressing to win back balls high up and bombing men forward enables them to create chances and scoring goals. 1/2
Having this direct attacking style does not make them the most defensive sound side but it favors the balance by overloading opposition's defences. 2/2.

Marco Rose is a manager on the rise and I would not be surprised if to see him in a top club soon.
