Here’s why so many of us are pushing back on this whole “reach out to Trump voters and their concerns” horseshit, so quickly and so vociferously: because we remember 2008. Do you remember 2008? The most important election of our lifetime, we were told.
It came at the end of a Republican administration that was, at that time, shocking in its inhumanity and corruption. Uneasily divisive campaign, primarily in the proto-Trump Klan rallies of Sarah Palin, as overseen by, oh hey, look at that, @ProjectLincoln’s @SteveSchmidtSES.
So Obama won and it felt like a huge wave of relief and happiness and a chance for justice. But no, no, we need to come together – not red, not blue, but United States, etc.
So the previous admin was not held accountable for its many crimes, and Obama made a big show of reaching across the aisle for the sake of unity and bipartisanism, particularly in drafting his first order of business: health care legislation.
Do you remember how that went? Mitch McConnell – you know, the guy who still runs the Senate – announced that his primarily legislative goal was to make Obama a “one-term president.” The bipartisan committee watered down his health care initiative, and still didn’t vote for it.
Other progressive goals were shafted or abandoned. And then the Tea Party arrived, a movement explicitly aimed at demonizing the Democratic president. Which led, pretty directly, to Donald Trump, and here we are.
So yeah. Not really looking seriously at doing that shit again. And anyone who suggests we should can fuck all the way off. Thanks!
