Note to news editors:
Kamala Harris is a black woman.
She described herself as:
“the second African-American woman and first South Asian-American senator in history”.
She details her mixed-race identity and upbringing in her 2019 memoir “The Truths We Hold”...
describing how she & her sister “were raised with a strong awareness of and appreciation for Indian culture,” while her mother also “understood very well that she was raising two black daughters” & “was determined to make sure (they) would grow into confident, proud black women.”
She is a black woman who is Jamaican, African-American and South Asian.
Her blackness is not hyphenated, her other identities are.
My South Asian friends please continue to celebrate her as one of yours. My Jamaican brothers and sisters, we will continue to do the same.
But she is Black and that does not limit her but positively helps her to embrace all of her heritage.
