Our BSL interpreters this afternoon are @LisaLiBSL & Nakisayi Laurse

#SBWNcon2020
Dean opens the festivities by asking "How are you finding voices and breaking down barriers to entry?" #SBWNcon2020
Lemara Lindsay-Prince, Commissioning Editor, ( @MerkyBooks) responds first about her work on finding "voices that aren't in books" and mentions how the imprint started as a partnership with @PenguinUKBooks and Stormzy *no big deal!!!!*
Sha Nazir, Publisher and Co-Founder ( @BHP_Comics) speaks about a project with @CreativeScots to promote and platform the work of comic writers of colour!

You can find more about this press on their website: https://bhpcomics.squarespace.com/
Francis Bickmore, Publishing Director, ( @canongatebooks), talks about how the Edinburgh-based press has an internationalist and outward looking ethos with the writers they publish and the books they are interested in. https://canongate.co.uk/
And now onto Kay Farrell, Assistant Publisher, ( @sandstonepress), who speaks about being outside the mainstream as a press based in the Highlands but with a wider Scottish and European focus.

Challenging the misconception that the press publishes only "local" writers.
David Stevens, Co-Founder, ( @_KnightsOf / @BooksRound) speaks now about a frustration in the lack of diverse voices and seeing a real need for representation in Children's literature.

You can find their titles here: http://knightsof.media/
Lemara Lindsay-Prince, Commissioning Editor, ( @MerkyBooks) speaks now about how editors have the power to seek those diverse voices and be cultural ambassadors. But acknowledges the work that it takes to bring a book through acquisition, even when you fight for it! #SBWNcon2020
Now our panellists are speaking about the actual acquisition process which is very illuminating both for established and emerging writers and those seeking literary agents. #SBWNcon2020
@Sha_Nazir explains now how the acquisition process for graphic novels is quite different from traditional publishing!

@BHP_Comics produces on average four books a year.

This allows the press to actively look for new voices and the stories they want to see in the world.
Well that is our panel events all wrapped up! We're so appreciative for the generous and insightful answers.

A VERY big thank you to all involved, including our sponsors, BSL interpreters, volunteers and audience!

We’re now shifting the #SBWNCon2020 onto Twitter.
