For the first time ever, I actually get to *sign* a few books! I did the border illustrations and headers for The Lightbringers, first in a new series of folklore retellings by @andtheHare - open the thread to see the original drawings... https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👇🏽" title="Rückhand Zeigefinger nach unten (mittlerer Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Rückhand Zeigefinger nach unten (mittlerer Hautton)">
Here are the sheets and notes of all the little wreaths and the different images which fabulous @graffeg_books designer, Joana Rodrigues, combined in various ways to add detail to the book.
Here are a few of the ones that were not used, just sketches, working out how dense a border could be in a smallish book, and what colours would work against the foliage.
All the little sketches have notes, discussed with author and illustrator @andtheHare so designer Joana would know which page each was intended for..
And my favourite. Karin let me draw a sleeping hedgehog but refused to let me give it red wellies. So I added the red wellies after I& #39;d sent the scanned image to Joana. All hedgehogs need red wellies. If she woke in the Spring and found NO red wellies hedgie would be distraught!
This is such a lovely book, and it was a joy to be able to work on it, and alongside a writer and illustrator who I admire very much.
As a textile artist, working with photographs in natural settings, I& #39;ve noticed that she is always overlooked for awards. Her sense of composition, atmosphere and character is wonderful, but it isn& #39;t seen as & #39;proper illustration& #39; somehow, which is an embarrassing oversight.
