When religious worship became a status symbol in Nigeria, I became an atheist. Went to a church and they told me some seats were reserved. I sat there and didn't budge. After a while, I said,”fuck it!” I left church for many years.
One reason I have remained Catholic is the fact that I can be anywhere and it is the same Mass. I can be in any church and sit anywhere I like. I don't have to be forced to do anything or judged by my choices. One church in Lome put a dress code including no shorts, I left it.
Some Catholic church parishes decide they want to be ancient and I leave them for the ancient. The beauty of religion should be choice and tolerance. Not force and intolerance.
I never believed in dressing up for church as it is not a social event. I realized that in Lagos, people started making it a social event. I went to my ”village church” SS Philip and James and to my village priest Fr. Patrick Adegbite. I left Falomo and others for socialites.
The priests can decide to play ”dress-up” if they want. I believe the congregation should be free to come as they are. I started writing this thread with another intention in mind but once again, not my circus and not my monkeys. All religions are guilty of intolerance.
