Second Lieutenant Walter Tull
28 April 1888- 25 March 1918

Professional Tottenham Hotspur player and one of the first black Army Officers to command troops in a regular unit during The Great War.
Walter enlisted in 1914 in the newly formed 17th (Football) battalion, #MiddlesexRegiment . Second Lieutenant, #WalterTull , fought at the #Somme #Passchendaele and during the Italian campaign and was cited in despatches for his ‘gallantry and coolness’
for leading his company of 26 men to safety during two missions. Recognized by many Generals, Walter rose through the ranks despite the military rule of segregation of black officers commanding white soldiers. Walter was killed in 1918 while courageously leading his men during a
counter attack mission and is commemorated on the #Arras Memorial.
