A Thread with proofs from the Quran, Sunnah and statements of the pious predecessors:
Before reading this Thread, please read the Thread about how to correctly understand the Names and Attributes of Allāh: https://twitter.com/look4yourself/status/1325383802533851136
(1) Evidence 1: Allāh says about the angels in the Heavens: „They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.“ [16:50]
(2) Evidence 2: Allāh says Himself, that He is over the Heaven. He says: „Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven [Allāh], will not cause the earth to sink with you, then behold it shakes?“ [67:16]
(3) Evidence 3: Allāh says that He is „over His slaves“. [6:61]
(4) Evidence 4: Allāh says that the angles „ascend“ to Him. The Prophet ﷺ also said: „Then those angels who have stayed with you overnight, ascend (to Heaven) and Allāh asks them..“ Sahīh Bukhāri [7429].
(5) Evidence 5: To Allāh „ascend all goodly words…“ [35:10]
(6) Evidence 6: Allāh sent the book, i.e. the Quran „down“.
(7) Evidence 7: The Prophet ﷺ was the most knowledgeable about the Attributes of Allāh. In his biggest gathering on Hajjatul-Wada’, he at one point pointed with his blessed finger to the sky and said: „O Allāh, be witness!“ Sahīh Muslim [1218]
(8) Evidence 8: The Prophet ﷺ was the most knowledgeable about the Attributes of Allāh, and he one time asked a slave-girl: „Where is Allāh?“ She replied: „He is in the heaven.“ He ﷺ said that this girl is a believer! [Sahih Muslim 537]
(9) Abul Hasan al-Ash’ari [d. 324H] said regarding evidence 8:
„This proofs that Allāh is over His Throne, over the heavens.“ [al-Ibānah, page 119]
(10) Imām Ibn Abdul Barr [d. 463H] said regarding it: The meaning of this Hadīth is clear and in no need to be discussed. With regards to the question of the Prophet ﷺ and the girl answering: „In the heaven.“, then this is what the people of truth are upon.“ [at-Tamhīd 22/80].
(11) Note that the (في) that Is used (literally: „in the heaven“) has the meaning of (على) („over the heaven, over His Throne“), as mentioned by Ibn Abdul-Barr in at-Tamhīd (7/130).
(12) Just as in Baqarah 2:11 or Tawbah 9:2 or Anfal 6:11 ( فِي الْأَرْضِ) does not mean „in the earth“, but „on the earth“.
(13) Imām Abdul Barr also said that this is what Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamā’ah is upon, and the Ahlul Hadīth, and those who have understanding of the Ahadīth, i.e. that Allāh is over the heavens and His knowledge is everywhere. [al-Istiskār 7/337]
(14) Imām ad-Dārimi [d. 255H] said in the explanation of this Hadīth: „This Hadīth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a proof that as long as one does not know that Allāh is not on earth, rather above in the heaven, then he is not a believer…
(15) …And in the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a refutation of those who say that He is everywhere, and that you cannot attribute a „where“ to Him…
(16) …If the matter was as the misguided people claim, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have refuted the statement of the girl…“ [Radd ala Jahmiyyah li Darimi, page 46-47]
(17) Evidence 9: When in the night of Mi’rāj the Prophet ﷺ was enjoined the prayers, he ﷺ „descended“ from Allāh to Mūsa [alaihis salām] and then went back to Allāh, then descended to Mūsa [alaihis salām]… Sahīh Bukhāri [3207], Sahīh Muslim [162].
(18) Evidence 10: The believers will see Allāh in Jannah.
Ibn Majah [179, with an authentic chain].
(19) Regarding point 9, Abdul Izz al-Hanafi [d. 792H] said in his Sharh of Aqidah at-Tahawiyyah that this point is directly connected to Allāh being above the creation. Also note the additional comments of Abdul Izz.
(20) Evidence 11: The Prophet ﷺ said: „Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens.“
at-Tirmidhi [1924, with an authentic chain].
(21) Evidence 12: Ummul Mu’minīn Zaynab [radiallahu anha] used to say: „You were given in marriage by your families, while I was married [to the Prophet ﷺ] by Allah from over seven Heavens.“ Sahīh Bukhāri [7420]
(22) Evidence 13: The Prophet ﷺ said one time: „…although I am the trustworthy man of the One in the Heavens?“
Sahīh Bukhāri [4351]
(23) Evidence 14: When Sa’d bin Mu’adh [radiallahu anhu] made the judgement on Bani Quraidah, the Prophet ﷺ said: „He has judged between them today as Allāh judged, Who made this judgement over the Heavens.“
[al-Mustadrak lil Hākim 2/124, Hasan Isnād]
