Remembrance Sunday has got a lot more & #39;celebratory& #39; in my lifetime. The industrialised destruction of millions of human beings in the contest between imperial powers that was WWI is being recast as "defending freedom".
Of course, the bind is that *if* Remembrance Sunday is about remembering those who "defended our freedoms" it explicitly excludes all the soldiers who have died in other conflicts.
Did a Twitter search for "sacrifice" and "freedom" and it very much looks like this is the new consensus in the popular mind.
I *will* remember, today. I will not forget. I will not erase the misery, destruction, and murder of war, a crime that we should always seek to avoided. Not will I erase the politics of war and disrespect the *victims* by transforming wars into fairy tales.
