A few tweets with my thoughts on "remembrance" Sunday, when too much is forgotten:

Tonight I'll raise a glass to the young British soldiers who refused to fight in Ireland & elsewhere over the years. They went to jail & to the gallows rather than disgrace humanity....
In particular, I will drink to the honour of 2 of them - a Scouser who went to jail after refusing to fight in Derry, & to his friend who, on the night internment was introduced, promised a young internee that he would do everything he could to stop the British murder machine...
He bought himself out of the British army & along with my Scouse friend played a key role in working against British militarism by publicising and opposing imperialist violence in a number of peace organisations during decades of intensive work. They also helped and organised...
other ex-soldiers who were sickened by violence & wanted to oppose the war in Ireland.

A lot of the refusers were black soldiers who related to the cause of Ireland & believed that Irish lives matter - surely an act of compassion that we need to reciprocate by supporting...
the Black Lives Matter movement wherever we are. Many of these people were imprisoned for their beliefs and for refusing to fight - a noble history that deserves to be written, acknowledged & learned from. It's a small world & the past has a wonderful way of bringing us...
our lives, and our stories back into contact and renewing our solidarity. Let's honour every one of these heroes today because, through their profound acts of refusal, which were the most powerful weapons in their hands, they honoured all of humanity.
