using they/them pronouns when talking to a new person avoids the action of misgendering them. until further notice, you should not be using other pronouns. that way you don't misgender them/don't get cancelled FOR misgendering them.
using they/them pronouns when referring to a person sometimes isn't always used gender wise. it is a plural way of saying "that person." so in the way some people use it, it's not always about gender, it's just referring to someone.

when talking with someone you don't know, especially on toxic app such as twitter, and ESPECIALLY especially if you are on stan twitter, you should always go with they/them unless told otherwise.
